SMOK Nord Guide

First released in 2018, the Nord series by SMOK capitalized on the burgeoning popularity of pod vapes by providing a platform that combined the power of a full-sized vape mod with the small and convenient size of a pod system. Effectively, the SMOK Nord was the first pod mod – and it was a big hit.

The SMOK Nord series is now in its fifth generation, and the series now includes several flanking products as well. The series is so large, in fact, that you might have trouble choosing which one to buy if you’ve never owned a Nord device before. You could simply choose the one with the biggest number at the end, but that’s not the entire story because the previous devices in the series are also in production and remain quite popular now.

SMOK Nord Vapes

So, how can you choose which Nord vape is the right device for you? We’re going to help you out with this comprehensive guide. In it, we’re going to explain what’s different about every SMOK Nord. We’re also going to explain which pods and coils each device uses, so you’ll know exactly how to get started with your chosen device.

We’ll start our guide where SMOK did – with the first SMOK Nord of them all.

SMOK Nord

SMOK Nord

First released in 2018, the original SMOK Nord is no longer available but was the device that kickstarted the Nord series and began the trend of pod systems that are powerful and satisfying while remaining surprisingly small and pocketable. The original Nord had a battery capacity of 1,100 mAh and operated at a fixed power level of 10-15 watts depending on the resistance of the installed coil. The Nord had mesh coils available from the very beginning, and standard wound coils were also available.

SMOK Nord 2

SMOK Nord 2

Variable power is the biggest new feature of the SMOK Nord 2. Featuring fully adjustable wattage up to a maximum power of 40 watts, the Nord 2 retains the single-button design of the original Nord and allows you to use that button to access all of the device’s functions. A screen on the side of the device shows you the current wattage along with the battery life, the puff count, the device’s operational voltage and the resistance of the installed coil. The battery capacity has been increased to 1,500 mAh, and the charging speed has been increased to 1.2 amps. Lastly, the Nord 2 has a larger pod capacity of 4.5 ml, whereas the original Nord held 3 ml of vape juice.

SMOK Nord X

SMOK Nord X

Why did SMOK call their follow-up to the Nord 2 the Nord X instead of calling it the Nord 3? Who knows; SMOK can be a little odd with their product names sometimes. Originally conceived as a more powerful version of the SMOK Nord for experienced vapers who wanted a more advanced product, the Nord X established some conventions that SMOK has continued to use throughout the Nord series. Compared to the Nord 2, the Nord X keeps the same battery capacity of 1,500 mAh but ups the maximum power to 60 watts. Additional features of the Nord X include separate buttons for adjusting the wattage, USB-C charging, an increased e-liquid capacity of 6 ml and IP67-level dust and water resistance.

SMOK Nord 4

SMOK Nord 4

Although SMOK returned to numbered product names with the Nord 4, it’s obvious at first glance that this device has more in common with the Nord X than it has with the Nord 2. Compared to the Nord X, the Nord 4 has a reduced pod capacity – back to the 4.5 ml capacity of the Nord 2 – but it also has a higher maximum power of 80 watts. The battery capacity has also been increased to 2,000 mAh. In addition to the wider power range, the biggest new feature of the Nord 4 is that it’s the first SMOK Nord vape with adjustable airflow. To make the draw tighter or looser, just twist the dial on the front of the device.

SMOK Nord 5

SMOK Nord 5

The improvements to the SMOK Nord 5 are both functional and cosmetic. The biggest functional improvement is that it’s the first Nord device to support SMOK’s brand-new RPM3 coil series, which feature ultra-low coil resistances and produce the biggest vapor clouds that you’ve ever seen from a small pod system. To accommodate the increased vapor production of the new coils, the Nord 5 has a new airflow adjustment mechanism and a wider vapor channel in the mouthpiece. The biggest cosmetic improvement, meanwhile, is a new leather-wrapped variation that truly takes the Nord series into the realm of luxury vapes. Compared to the Nord 4, the Nord 5 also has a slightly increased pod capacity of 5 ml.

SMOK Nord 50W

SMOK Nord 50W

Released in late 2021, the SMOK Nord 50W is a flanking product that exists around the same point on the Nord vape timeline as the Nord 4 but has slightly different capabilities and coil support. The Nord 50W has an 1,800 mAh battery and a maximum power of 50 watts as the name obviously implies. The Nord 50W has a pod capacity of 4 ml, and it also includes the improved airflow control that SMOK would later feature in the Nord 5. The main draw of the SMOK Nord 5, though, is that it has three different pods that enable support for SMOK Nord, LP2 and RPM coils. That’s a huge coil selection, so you should have no trouble finding a coil option that fits your requirements perfectly.

SMOK Nord Pro

SMOK Nord Pro

Released after the Nord 4 and Nord 50W, the SMOK Nord Pro was something of a back-to-basics approach that presented a simpler option for those who weren’t enthused about the increasing complexity of the main Nord series. The Nord Pro eliminates the adjustable airflow and wattage of other Nord devices, and it works with just one pod and just one series of coils. The Nord Pro has replaceable coils unlike many beginner-oriented pod systems – but otherwise, it’s the epitome of simplicity. Just charge the battery, fill the pod and press the button to vape. Although the Nord Pro was an interesting experiment, SMOK didn’t continue that theme with future Nord devices – perhaps because they already offered several other pod vapes for people who were more interested in simplicity than they were in flexibility.

SMOK Nord C

SMOK Nord C

The SMOK Nord 5 was originally released in 2022, and it’s the last device in the main SMOK Nord series to date. That doesn’t mean, however, that SMOK hasn’t released any new Nord vapes since then. They’ve simply focused on flanking products like the SMOK Nord C, which was released in 2023 and has a completely new design compared to any previous Nord device. The SMOK Nord C features a gently curved exterior with an attractive color gradient, and the rectangular fire button of the previous Nord devices has been replaced with a new circular button that has a raised outer edge to prevent accidental presses. The Nord C has a new top-filling pod that you can refill without removing it from the device. It has an 1,800 mAh battery and a 50-watt power range, and it also features the improved stepless airflow control that SMOK introduced with the Nord 5.

SMOK Nord GT

SMOK Nord GT

Released in early 2024, the SMOK Nord GT is the most recent Nord vape at the time of writing. It’s got some major technical improvements compared to previous Nord devices, and the design has also been dramatically modernized. This is easily the most attractive Nord vape to date. The Nord GT has the largest battery capacity of any Nord device – 2,500 mAh – and you’ll need it because this device is designed to produce bigger clouds than any previous device in the Nord series. The airflow opening is wider than ever, and the size of the airflow adjustment mechanism has also been increased. A redesigned clear pod makes it easy to see your supply of vape juice. As an additional improvement, the fire button for the Nord GT has also been widened and is easier than ever to reach.
