How Long Does Vape Juice Last

Do you live in an area that’s underserved by brick-and-mortar vape shops? There’s something to be said for keeping your money in your community, but it’s quite another thing when vape shop owners take advantage of the fact that they have no competition. If that’s the situation in your city, nothing is quite as unpleasant as overpaying for e-liquid at a local vape shop because you’re out of juice and are still waiting for an order to arrive. If only you’d ordered a few days earlier!

How Long Does Vape Juice Last

One of the interesting aspects of vaping is that it isn’t self-limiting in the way that cigarettes are. When you open a new pack and smoke a cigarette, you know that you have 19 cigarettes left in the pack. Simply by counting, it’s easy to tell how quickly you’re going through your cigarettes and when you’ll need to buy more. Vaping isn’t like that at all; some people sit around and puff on their vaping devices all day, topping up their tanks as they go, without having any real idea of how much e-liquid they’re using. Before they know it, they’re nearly finished with their last bottle and haven’t ordered more juice yet.

Does that sound like you? If it does, we’re here to help. In this article, we’re going to give you a general idea of how much e-liquid you use based on the type of vaping equipment you own. Based on that, you’ll have a much better idea of how long e-juice lasts and how quickly you’re likely to go through your bottles. We’ll also discuss e-liquid usage in terms of nicotine content to help you figure out how much e-liquid you “should” be using to equal the satisfaction level of cigarettes. Let’s begin!

How Much Vape Juice Do People Use Per Day?

If you scan vaping discussion groups on websites like Reddit, you’ll see many informal surveys in which people report on the amount of vape juice that they use per day. Over the years, the daily e-liquid usage of the typical vaper has increased. That’s not surprising. Vape tanks produce bigger clouds than ever, and the bigger a tank’s cloud production is, the more e-liquid that tank will use. The good news is that sub-ohm vaping is also responsible for today’s vape juice prices being lower than the prices of the past. As people began to use more e-liquid each day, the high e-liquid prices of the industry’s early years became unsustainable. Vape juice makers had no choice but to price their products more competitively.

That, however, is just the sub-ohm segment of the vaping community. On the other side, there are millions of happy pod system owners using nicotine salt e-liquid and consuming relatively little of it each day.

So, how much vape juice do people use per day? That depends largely on the type of vaping equipment and the nicotine strength of the e-liquid.

  • Pod system users tend to use about 1-2 ml of e-liquid per day.
  • People who use mouth-to-lung vaping hardware with freebase nicotine e-liquid tend to use about 2-5 ml of e-liquid per day.
  • People who use sub-ohm tanks designed for direct-to-lung inhaling tend to use about 8-15 ml of e-liquid per day.
  • People who vape frequently and use high-end cloud chasing tanks may go through as much as 15-30 ml of e-liquid per day. Some very heavy vapers use even more than 30 ml daily.

How Long Does a Bottle of Vape Juice Last?

Based on the usage data above, you can arrive at a rough estimate of how long a bottle of vape juice will last for you.

  • Nicotine salt e-liquid usually ships in 30 ml bottles. With typical usage, you can expect a bottle of nicotine salt juice to last at least two weeks and possibly as long as a month.
  • Among companies manufacturing freebase nicotine e-liquid, the 100 ml bottle size is very popular right now. We’ll use that bottle size when estimating how long a bottle of freebase nicotine e-liquid lasts. If you use a mouth-to-lung vaping setup and buy a 100 ml bottle of e-liquid, you can expect the bottle to last around a month and potentially longer.
  • If you use a direct-to-lung tank, a 100 ml bottle of vape juice will last roughly a week. For very heavy vapers, though, a 100 ml bottle of e-liquid is only enough for a few days of vaping.

How Does the Nicotine in Vape Juice Equate to Cigarettes?

When you consider how frequently you should be vaping, it’s a good idea to let your body be your guide. If you’re feeling strong cravings for nicotine, you should probably vape. If you vape and still feel a strong urge to smoke, the nicotine strength of your e-liquid is probably too low. At the same time, though, you should monitor your nicotine intake because it’s easy to slip into a pattern of constant chain vaping without realizing what you’re doing. You could end up increasing your dependence on nicotine rather than decreasing it.

So, let’s talk a bit about the nicotine in e-liquid as it compares to cigarettes. By comparing your nicotine intake to that of a smoker, you can get a general idea of how long your e-liquid should last if you’re using it as a smoker would.

A single cigarette contains about 6-28 mg of nicotine, but you don’t actually absorb most of it. In all, you’ll absorb around 1.1-1.8 mg of nicotine for each cigarette you smoke. That’s about 22-28 mg of total nicotine absorbed from a full pack of cigarettes.

Likewise, we also know that you won’t actually absorb all of the nicotine that you inhale in vapor form. We do know that, with a nicotine salt e-liquid at a strength of around 59 mg, you’ll absorb about the same amount of nicotine that you would absorb from smoking – if you vape at the same rate as a smoker would smoke. If you’re using one 0.7 ml pod per day with a nicotine strength of 59 mg, you’re consuming 41.3 mg of nicotine per day. You’re not absorbing all of it, of course, but we can use those figures as a starting point.

If we assume that you need to vape around 40 mg of nicotine per day to get as much nicotine as a smoker, how much e-liquid would you need to use per day at various popular nicotine strengths?

  • If the nicotine strength of your e-liquid is 30 mg, you can expect to use around 3 ml of e-liquid per day.
  • If the nicotine strength of your e-liquid is 20 mg, you can expect to use around 2 ml of e-liquid per day.
  • If the nicotine strength of your e-liquid is 6 mg, you can expect to use around 6 ml of e-liquid per day.
  • If the nicotine strength of your e-liquid is 3 mg, you can expect to use around 13 ml of e-liquid per day.

You may not actually need to use the amount of e-liquid suggested above to feel satisfied with your vaping experience, of course, so you should let your body tell you what you need. If you’re using significantly more e-liquid than the quantities listed above, though, it might be a sign that you should consider cutting back.

How Long Does Vape Juice Last in Storage?

These days, people expect a high level of professionalism from e-liquid makers. Part of that is making sure that e-liquid packages have things like batch numbers and expiration dates. In that way, you don’t really need to worry about how long vape juice lasts in storage because you can simply look at the date on the bottle and ensure that you use the e-liquid before that date.

Typically, the expiration date of e-liquid is set at around one year from the date of manufacture. While you can safely store your vape juice for a while, though, it’s usually wise to use it sooner rather than later. That’s because nicotine is volatile and degrades over time. You’ll see the evidence of that in the form of yellowing in your older e-liquids. As the nicotine degrades and oxidizes, the nicotine content of the e-liquid decreases. A bottle of vape juice that you’ve stored for a long time, therefore, won’t have exactly the same nicotine content that it had when you first bought it.
