Geekvape H45 Aegis Legend 2 Review

The Geekvape Aegis series of vape mods and pod systems has ruled the top of the vape charts for so long that it’s hard to remember a time when the devices didn’t exist. Geekvape has an Aegis device in basically every product category, and the Aegis Hero series – which includes the new Geekvape H45 – sits near the top of the range as a compact but powerful pod mod.

Geekvape changed their naming conventions for the second generation of Aegis vapes. The Geekvape H45 is the successor to the Aegis Hero – so while it’s called the Aegis Hero 2 in some places, “H45” is the official name.

The Geekvape H45 has a physical design very similar to that of the original Aegis Hero, but it features a couple of significant improvements under the hood and is a worthy upgrade if you’re using the original Aegis Hero and are in the market for a new device. It’s also a great choice if you love the pod vaping paradigm but want something that can deliver the same level of power as a traditional vape mod.

So, should the Geekvape H45 be your next vape – and what makes it different from the original Aegis Hero? To find the answers to those questions, you’ll have to read our review.

Features

Water, Dust and Shock Resistance

The biggest feature of the Geekvape H45 is the feature that has made the entire Geekvape Aegis series famous: Geekvape’s “Tri-proof” design. Along with enhanced shock resistance, the H45 features IP67-level ingress protection. The IP67 rating means that dust can’t penetrate the device, and it’s safe in up to a meter of water for up to 30 minutes. We’ve all dropped our vapes once or twice, and it’s nice to know that the Geekvape H45 can tolerate most everyday accidents and keep on working.

Vape Mod Power in a Tiny Package

Geekvape H45 Size

The Geekvape H45 is incredibly small for the level of power it delivers. Although it’s shaped like a traditional vape mod, it’s nowhere near the same size. The picture above shows the original Geekvape Aegis Hero positioned next to a full-sized vape mod – it’s dramatically smaller, lighter and more pocketable. Although you’ll obviously get better battery life with a full-sized mod, most people don’t actually need the extra wattage because modern mesh coils produce enormous clouds at much lower power levels.

Leak-Free Top-Filling Pod

Geekvape H45 Pod

The pod is extremely leak resistant since the air intake is at the top rather than the bottom. The pod also fills from the top, and you can add e-liquid without removing the pod from the device. That’s a rare feature among pod mods, which usually require removal of the pod for refilling.

Refined, Stylish Design

Geekvape’s design refinements for the H45 are absolutely stellar. The device’s outer shell uses more metal and less plastic than the Aegis Hero. The H45 feels very solid in the hand, and it weighs only 20 grams more than the Aegis Hero. The soft leather grip enhances comfort and provides a nice visual contrast.

Geekvape H45 vs. Aegis Hero: What Are the Differences?

Geekvape H45 vs Aegis Hero

If you own the original Aegis Hero, you’re probably curious as to what’s new with the Geekvape H45 and how Geekvape has improved it over the previous device. Here’s what’s changed.

  • The Geekvape H45 has a large color display measuring almost an inch diagonally. The Aegis Hero has a much smaller monochrome display.
  • The Geekvape H45 has a higher battery capacity of 1,400 mAh, compared to the 1,200-mAh capacity of the Aegis Hero.
  • The Geekvape H45 has a USB-C charging port. The Aegis Hero charges via a micro-USB port.

Along with the technological improvements listed above, the biggest difference between the Geekvape H45 and the Aegis Hero is the fact that the H45 has a greatly refined design. Although the Aegis Hero had room for a larger screen, Geekvape opted for a smaller one instead – perhaps to keep costs down. The much brighter color display of the Geekvape H45 really stands out, and it’s also much easier to read. The Geekvape H45 also features a much larger color selection, which includes options for pretty much any taste.

How to Use the Geekvape H45

If you’ve used other pod systems or pod mods, using the Geekvape H45 will probably be second nature for you from the very start. You might find a brief walkthrough helpful, though, if you’re thinking about stepping up from disposable vapes to a refillable device and want to know what using the Geekvape H45 is like. Here’s a brief walkthrough.

Setting Up

Geekvape H45 Instructions

To set up the Geekvape H45 and prepare it for use, follow these steps.

  • Connect the Geekvape H45 to your computer using the charging cable included in the box. Charging the device will take a little time, so you can go through the other setup steps while waiting for the battery to charge.
  • Remove the pod from the Geekvape H45. Install a coil by pushing it into the hole at the bottom of the pod. Note that the hole has two flat edges that need to align with the flat edges in the coil’s base. If the coil is misaligned, you won’t be able to push it all the way in. The device won’t work correctly, and the pod may also leak.
  • Open the silicone lid at the top of the pod. Add e-liquid through the filling port until the pod is almost full and close the lid tightly.
  • After you’ve filled the pod for the first time or installed a new coil, you shouldn’t start vaping right away because the coil’s wick will still be dry. Wait about 5-10 minutes before vaping to ensure that the wick is entirely saturated.

Vaping

Once you’ve charged the battery and filled the pod, the Geekvape H45 is ready to use. Here’s what to do next.

  • If the screen isn’t illuminated, press the fire button five times quickly to turn the Geekvape H45 on.
  • Use the adjustment buttons on the front of the device to change the wattage. Make sure that you’re starting out at the low end of the suggested wattage range for the coil you’re using. The suggested ranges are 15-25 watts for the 0.6-ohm coil and 25-35 watts for the 0.4-ohm coil. You can increase the power after the coil is fully broken in, but you want to start low in order to avoid burnt hits.
  • To vape, draw air through the mouthpiece while holding the fire button.
  • To change the airflow, twist the collar at the base of the mouthpiece.

Changing the Mode

The Geekvape H45 has two vaping modes available: Power mode and Bypass mode. Here’s how they work.

  • In Power mode, you choose the device’s output power manually using the adjustment buttons.
  • In Bypass mode, the device always outputs its full available power, which starts at around 4.2 volts and decreases as the battery’s charge is depleted.

To switch between modes, start by pressing the fire button three times. Use one of the adjustment buttons to make the screen say “POWER” or “BYPASS.” Hold the fire button or wait two seconds to confirm.

Geekvape H45 Review: Our Expert Perspective

The Geekvape H45 may not bring any industry-changing new features to the table, but it’s really an everything-for-everybody vaping device that’s going to hit the sweet spot for a lot of people in terms of providing the right level of power at the right size.

Although many recent pod vapes are beginning to offer a bit more power than the pod systems of the past – up to 30 watts in many cases – they’re not true pod mods because they have small pods and small coils. The Geekvape H45, on the other hand, gives you an authentic vape mod experience in a significantly smaller package. Although it’s certainly usable for mouth-to-lung inhaling, it’s really designed to provide a looser direct-to-lung experience for people who love big clouds.

If you fall into that category, you’re really going to be surprised by how much smaller and lighter the Geekvape H45 feels in your pocket compared to the mod you’re using now.

Best Points

  • Output of up to 45 watts in a surprisingly portable package
  • Durable construction provides protection from dust, water and physical shock
  • Appealing design with a huge variety of color options

Could Be Improved

  • Same coils and same power range as the Aegis Hero, which means the improvements over the previous device are mainly cosmetic
