Geek Bar Keeps Firing After I Hit It

If your Geek Bar is flashing red and keeps firing after you hit it – or if it starts hissing and blinking on its own when you aren’t using it – your device has a condition called auto-firing. It’s a potentially serious issue because it could cause your device’s battery to overheat.

Like all modern vapes, a Geek Bar has an automatic timer that causes the device to shut off and blink during a long puff. The timer helps to prevent the battery from overheating. If the device immediately begins firing on its own again after the blinking stops, though, it’s never going to have a chance to cool down completely.

The good news is that if your Geek Bar keeps firing after you hit it, there’s a good chance that the fix is fairly simple. If you’re not able to make your device stop auto-firing, though, you need to handle the issue carefully to ensure that a more serious issue won’t occur.

Thankfully, modern Geek Bars make it easy to handle an auto-firing issue – and that’s where we’ll begin.

Why Would a Geek Bar Keep Firing After You Hit It?

Geek Bar Puff Sensor Stuck

A disposable vape usually begins auto-firing because the puff sensor is stuck in place.

The reason why a Geek Bar keeps firing after you hit it – or fires on its own when you aren’t using it – is because the device’s puff sensor is stuck. The puff sensor in a disposable vape is a simple mechanism with a moving part that completes a circuit when air flows through the device. When the airflow stops, the mechanism moves back to its original position.

When a Geek Bar or another disposable vape has an auto-firing issue, it’s because the puff sensor is stuck in the closed position. This usually happens because there’s a little e-liquid on the sensor, which is fairly common with disposable vapes because a modern disposable vape has a large amount of e-liquid in a very tiny package. Occasionally, a few drops of vape juice end up in places where they shouldn’t be.

Now that you understand the problem, it’s time for you to get the solution. We’ll discuss that next.

Turn Your Geek Bar Off

Moving the airflow switch to the "Close" position turns modern Geek Bars off.

Turn your Geek Bar off to prevent overheating if you can’t get it to stop auto-firing.

The great thing about fixing a Geek Bar that’s auto-firing is that if you have a recent model like the Geek Bar Pulse, Geek Bar Pulse X or Geek Bar Skyview, there’s no need to be concerned about your device overheating because you can actually turn it off. To do that, just move the airflow slider on the bottom of the device to the “Close” position. Your device can’t overheat if it’s turned off.

If you have one of the few remaining Geek Bar models without an on-off switch, you might need to take quick action if you can’t stop your device from auto-firing. We’ll discuss that next.

What to Do if you Can’t Turn Your Geek Bar Off

If you can't get your Geek Bar to stop auto-firing, you should move it to a fire-safe location until the battery dies.

If you can’t stop your Geek Bar from auto-firing, move it to a fire-safe location and wait until the battery dies.

In a moment, we’ll talk about some potential ways of fixing a Geek Bar that keeps firing after you hit it. Before we do that, though, it’s important to discuss safety. If you have any vaping device that’s auto-firing and are unable to fix the problem or turn the device off, you need to move your Geek Bar to a fire-safe place and keep it there until the battery dies and the device is completely cool. Here are two ways of doing that.

  • You can put the device outside and cover it with dirt.
  • If you can’t bring the device outside, you can put it in a cooking pot. Make sure that nothing flammable is nearby.

Once you’ve done one of those things, you’ll simply wait for your Geek Bar’s battery to die. It should just take a few minutes. After the battery dies, make sure that the device is completely cool before moving it. Take it to a hazardous waste facility for recycling or dispose of it in accordance with your community’s guidelines.

How to Stop a Geek Bar from Auto-Firing

Blowing hard through the mouthpiece will usually fix an auto-firing Geek Bar.

Blowing hard through the mouthpiece will usually fix a Geek Bar that keeps firing.

As we explained earlier in the article, a Geek Bar keeps firing after you hit it because its puff sensor is stuck. In most cases, fixing the problem is fairly simple – you just need to unstick the sensor. There are two ways of doing that.

  • You can blow hard through the Geek Bar’s mouthpiece. Since that forces air to travel through the device in reverse, the sensor should get unstuck and turn off.
  • You can tap the Geek Bar firmly against your hand a few times. This may also release a stuck puff sensor.

You can also try turning the Geek Bar off and back on by toggling the airflow switch to the "Close" position and back. If the device is auto-firing because of an issue with the firmware, resetting it in this way may help.

What to Do with Your Geek Bar After Fixing It

If a disposable vape’s puff sensor gets stuck, it’ll probably stick again in the future.

The good news is that it’s usually fairly easy to unstick the puff sensor if you have a Geek Bar that keeps firing after you hit it. The bad news, though, is that there’s no way to fix the problem permanently because you can’t remove the vape juice that’s making the puff sensor stick. In other words, the problem will probably come back as you continue to use that device. As long as you can continue fixing the sensor by tapping or blowing through the device, that’s not a major concern. You should keep a close eye on it, though, because you want to make sure that your Geek Bar isn’t auto-firing on its own when you aren’t using it.

How to Prevent Your Geek Bars from Auto-Firing in the Future

The most common reason why any disposable vape starts auto-firing is because you’re puffing more firmly than necessary.

It’s possible for any disposable vape to develop an auto-firing issue even if you’re doing nothing wrong. As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, a disposable vape often has a very large amount of e-liquid in a small package. The Geek Bar Pulse X, for instance, has 18 ml of vape juice – that’s almost two thirds as much e-liquid as you’d get in a full bottle of nicotine salt vape juice. It’s not extremely rare for a drop or two to end up out of place.

The best way to minimize the chance of the puff sensor getting stuck in a Geek Bar is by making sure that you never use excessive air pressure when puffing on the device. The difference in air pressure is one of the biggest things that you’ll need to adjust to as you transition from smoking to vaping. When you vape, you should puff much more gently than you would have puffed on a cigarette. If you use too much air pressure, you’ll force extra e-liquid out of the device’s e-liquid container and flood the device’s coil. Some of the vape juice will end up in the airflow channel, and that’s how it gets stuck on the puff sensor.

How do you determine the correct amount of air pressure to use when you vape? With a puff-activated device like a Geek Bar, it’s easy. Just watch the device’s display. When the screen turns on, you’re using the correct amount of air pressure, and there’s no need to puff any harder.
